CTO Forum 2012 - Welcoming delegates to the CTO Forum and to Mauritius, a Mr. Dass Thomas, highlighted the way the programme of the Forum seeks to address the whole spectrum of interests. Mr. Trilock Dwarka paid tribute to the enormous amount of work the CTO has done in facilitating wide stakeholder dialogue in all spheres of ICTs. The ICT Authority aims to create an enabling regulatory environment to make Broadband available and affordable to all in Mauritius, resulting in complete network coverage of the Island. Welcoming delegates to the event, Professor Tim Unwin, the CEO of CTO, highlighted that Broadband is a prime focus area of the CTO under its new strategic plan. This was one of the reasons that led to the selection of Mauritius, which has made impressive gains in rolling out Mobile Broadband, as the host country of this pivotal Commonwealth event. Hon. Tassarajen Pillay Chedumbrum, identified the need to continuously redefine policies to take advantage of emerging technologies and opportunities, as the key challenge faced by policy makers. Delivering the key note speech H.E. Mr. Rajkeswur Purryag, called for an ICT vision for the Commonwealth that will help individual countries design their own policies in a harmonised manner. His Excellency stressed the potential of ICTs to provide citizen-centric services, create wealth and contribute to development in order to bridge the digital divide. The line up of speakers at the Forum includes policy makers, regulators and industry representatives who will examine the various facets of Broadband, from backhaul and access to content and value added services. A novel feature of the Forum 2012 is the Orange Apps Lab and a 30-hour Hackathon, in which young Mauritian developers will develop mobile apps focussing on public transport.
